Nature Immersion in Brazil: Ecotour Travel “Rio de Janeiro, Iguazu Falls, Lençois Maranhenses, Amazon Rainforest, Jalapao, Pantanal”

Brazil is a popular birding destination and a multitude of birds can be found throughout the country. There are dozens of parrot species, the most common and well known being the macaw. The country also hosts around forty species of birds of prey which include eagles, hawks, falcons and more. The smallest birds in Brazil are hummingbirds and there are several different kinds spread across the country while the largest bird is the flightless rhea which grows to 1.4m tall, with some weighing upwards of 30 kg.

Brazil’s coast and rivers provide habitats for a wealth of marine species. The rivers of the Amazon Basin are home to the pink dolphin, one of five freshwater cetaceans. These interesting creatures are only found in the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers and their tributaries. The grey dolphin also occupies Brazil’s rivers while the Fernando de Noronha archipelago is a good spot for viewing spinner dolphins. Also off the coast of Brazil are whale species including southern right whales and humpback whales. Sea turtles are protected in Brazil as five of the seven species found in the world live there.

As mentioned, over 689 mammal species inhabit the country. They include felines like jaguars, pumas, margay and the oncilla. Approximately 80 of the world’s 300 primate species can be found in and around Brazil, many of which are unique to the country. The most common primate is the squirrel monkey, however, other common species are howler monkeys, spider monkeys and capuchin monkeys. Other mammals found in Brazil are the giant anteater, armadillos, various types of sloths, river otters and more.

Despite hosting such a large variety of nature and wildlife, many of Brazil’s species are under constant threat. A staggering one-fifth of the Amazon Rainforest has been destroyed and nearly 93% of the Atlantic Forest has been cleared. Over seventy mammals are considered threatened or endangered. In order to protect the country’s natural landscapes, the first national park in Brazil, Itatiaia National Park, was created in 1937. As of 2012, there were 68 national parks that cover more than 2 million square kilometres, roughly 25% of Brazil’s national territory.

The Pantanal

The Pantanal is a vast expanse of wetlands which straddles the borders of Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia and is without question the best place to spot wild animals in the whole of South America and therefore the best place to spot wildlife and animals on a Brazil holiday. It is the world’s largest freshwater wetland and one of the best places in the world for birdspotting.

Jalapao

Jalapao, lying in the state of Tocantins, is far off the tourist track but a destination of great beauty. A rarely visited area most easily accessed through the airport at Palmas, Jalapao is a vast area of wilderness mixing cerrado forest, waterfalls, table-top mountains, white-water rivers, small cabloco villages, sand dunes and freshwater springs.

Lencois Maranhenses National Park

Say to most people you are going on holiday to Brazil and visiting Lencois Maranhenses National Park and 99.9% of people will say “where?” Located in eastern Maranhao, close to Sao Luis, it is a vast expanse of sand dunes separating land and sea. The dunes which rise up to 50 metres high stretch out in long flowing patterns and from the air look like giant bed sheets (lencois in Portuguese). This spectacular coastal park is relatively unknown outside of Brazil but is an incredible destination.

Amazon Rainforest

Think of Brazil and you think of the Amazon, the vast river which dissects the north of the country. The Amazon though is far more than just a river. It is a huge area of rainforest and waterways covering six of Brazil’s states stretching from its mouth at the Atlantic at Belem all the way to the Peruvian, Colombian and Bolivian borders. A journey along the length of the Amazon is the stuff of adventurers, boat-hopping and spending a couple of weeks in a hammock.
